Sylvia White Baskets

Artist Statement

Though I have been making baskets for many years, in the last ten I have been stimulated by the color, texture and flexibility of industrial material. My interest has been reinforced by my curiosity. How could these materials be shaped into artistic pieces that are worth saving, rather than being more pieces of junk to be thrown away? I haunt places that might have metals, strapping tape, pipe fittings, wire, cans, computer parts, and paper. I have learned как проводить собеседование при приеме на работу and many new techniques of preparing materials for weaving. Simply handling and exploring these cast-offs leads me to experiment with new concepts for vessels and wall hangings. Mostly, I think the material "speaks to me: in some way, giving me an inspiration for its ultimate shape.

Resume

Sylvia White's fascination with woven materials was sparked by living in Africa during the 1960's and 70's. Her recent vessels and wall hangings feature the use of metals, including copper and aluminum, aluminum cans in conjunction with plastics, wire, computer parts, and paper in its various forms.

In England, White studied with teachers who emphasized the use of recycled materials. She also studied a variety of techniques in the U.S. with nationally recognized basket makers. Over the years, White has given demonstrations and taught basketry classes at weaving conferences, Coupeville Arts Center in Washington, the Chicago Botanic Gardens in Illinois, and in her studio in Los Angeles and Port Townsend, Washington.
